ATTN! SFSU incoming Freshman who require Early Start: The deadline to register is *tomorrow.* AB540 students, please read.

1 Jun

The registration deadline for SFSU Early Start is tomorrow, June 1st.

I received an email with the following information regarding AB540 students who are required to begin Early Start this summer:

Although there is no official waiver for AB540 students, if the fees for Early Start will cause a financial hardship for the student, the student can have an academic advisor write a letter to Karen Kingsbury explaining the situation and have the fees waived. It is still considered on a case by case basis, but should be enough to remove the fees.

Karen Kingsbury is an undergrad advisor and Head of Orientation. Please see your high school counselor for more information about requesting a waiver for this program!

Cornell Engineering: Diversity Hosting Weekend. Applications Due August 1, 2012

1 Jun

This wonderful program is for seniors (class of 2013) who are interested in discovering Engineering at Cornell! There are a list of specific requirements however if you meet them, I highly encourage you to apply. VHS students: Ms. Traub or Mr. Guillespie will be your main resources for help filling this out!

While the program is FREE, transportation to the university is not!! However, there is a travel grant available and the application to both the program itself, and the travel grant, can be found here:

 http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/diversity/events/DHW.cfm

  • This program is for high school seniors (graduating in Spring 2013 only) from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in engineering (African American/Black, Latino, and Native American).
  • There is no cost for the program except for your own travel to campus.  However, you can apply for a travel grant to cover some or all of your travel expenses.  Be sure to fill out the Travel Assistance Application in addition to the Fall DHW Application.
  • Because we require one year each of Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics for our freshman admissions, we are also requiring these for our hosting program.  Note that these are requirements for you to fulfill before high school graduation, so taking them in Senior year still fulfills the requirement.
Good Luck!!!

Happy Summer, Everyone!!

25 May

First and foremost, many thanks for all the support this year for the Destination College Advising Corps scholarship blog! Since January, we have had over 6,000 people view the blog and I’m looking forward to even more in the fall.

Over summer, the blog will be fairly inactive and this entry will remain as a “sticky” – meaning it will stay on the top even if new things are added periodically, to remind people to check back in September when we kick off the 2012-2013 school year.

It has been wonderful working with Vallejo High School and I’m eager to begin advising with Skyline High next year. Though I’ll miss my Apaches dearly, I’m looking forward to a fresh new start too!

Once again, thanks so much for the support for UC Berkeley’s Destination College program and we’ll see you in the fall!
